AN AFTERNOON BEER CATCH-UP

AN AFTERNOON BEER CATCH-UP

Every other end of the work week, I update this AFTERNOON BEER Spotify playlist with a different mix of 30 tunes that shuffle well with that tasty afternoon indulgence (you know the one). And then I pair that playlist with a rundown of upcoming HWY 95EH upcoming events and recent reading material, plus sometimes some other things (and on the next end of the week, I do the same thing, except with a MORNING COFFEE playlist).

So, scroll downwards for a fresh batch of tunes + a rundown of happenings happening around HWY 95eh…

AFTERNOON BEER | To listen, you can either press play on the embedded player above or—and probably the better option—you can jump over to Spotify and listen there (I think Spotify still lets you create a free account, but I could be wrong as I have a subscription included in my phone bill).

If you use Spotify, you'll want to press the 'follow' button on this playlist as that way you can save it for offline listening (ie. take it with you / listen anywhere, innernetz or not) + it will automagically update every time a new batch tunes hat taste right with that cool afternoon reward is added.

PS - If you don't have a Spotify account, you can also try listening over on Soundsgood (as they give you a few more non-Spotify listening options). Alternatively, you can also tune into the 24/7 stream of ace tunes that Mountown Radio pumps out all day.

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE…

EVENTS COMING UP AROUND HWY 95EH…

If you live in the Highway 95eh area (or are here visiting)… combine sipping your beverage whilst listening to tunes with having a peak below for a summary happenings happening soon.

AND HERE'S SOME RECENT HWY 95EH BLOG POSTS…

Because sometimes having an afternoon cold one is a good excuse to catch up on some casual internet reading. And if you read one of the Q&A's, that's kinda like having a drinking partner, right?

IS THAT IT?

OK, that is it. For now. Catch a similar update every MONDAY or hang tight until next FRIDAY when this update comes in the flavour of a hot morning bevy. But until then…

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED W/ STEPHEN ROXBOROUGH

ON THE LATEST EDITION OF HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Stephen Roxborough—an award winning poet and author of Ego To Earthschool, who just so happens to be coming to Kimberley for the return of Poetry On The Rocks on April 21st at Centre 64—metaphorically stops by the blog to kindly give us all some recommendations from the top shelf of life's important categories. Because there is no better way to find out if a person is your people than finding out what that person likes, right? Right.

AND NOW… ONWARDS WITH THE LIFE TIPS

WHAT IS THE ONE ALBUM (OR EP OR SONG) THAT YOU THINK SHOULD BE THE VERY NEXT MUSICAL THING THAT EVERYONE PRESSES PLAY ON THE NEXT TIME THEY FIND THEMSELVES THINKING “WHAT SHOULD I LISTEN TO NOW”?

introducing karl blau (karl blau)
specific track: falling rain a stunning cover of the classic link wray song
nine minutes of exceptional sonic pleasure

WHAT IS THE ONE MOVIE OR TV SHOW THAT YOU THINK SHOULD BE NEXT IN EVERYBODY’S NETFLIX QUEUE (OK, DOESN’T HAVE TO BE NETFLIX, WE’RE ALL INTERNET ADULTS HERE AND KNOW HOW TO FIND ANYTHING ONLINE, ONE WAY OR ANOTHER)?

the sacrifice by andrei tarkovsky

great russian director's last film using bergman's crew and cast
his seven movies are the among the most poetic i've seen
you can watch them for free here

I (AND BY “I” I MEAN “THE PERSON THAT IS READING THIS”) AM GOING TO THE BOOK STORE (OK, PROBABLY AMAZON) TO FIND THE VERY NEXT BOOK THAT I WILL BE PUTTING SOME EXTREMELY VALUABLE ‘ME-TIME' ASIDE FOR. WHICH BOOK WOULD YOU GET, IF YOU WERE ME (AND, I SUPPOSE, YOU HADN’T ALREADY READ WHAT YOU’RE ABOUT TO SUGGEST)?

i would buy these two books for completely different and some of the same reasons:
the book by alan watts

they are both books of philosophy, one prose one poetry
watts is writing about what bissett is achieving

(p.s. i've read them both multiple times)

WHAT IS THE ONE WEBSITE (OR JUST ANY OLD INTERNET THING: APP, GIF, SERVICE, YOUTUBE VIDEO, WHATEVER) THAT YOU WOULD GET REALLY DOWN IN THE DUMPS ABOUT IF IT WERE TO SUDDENLY GO AWAY?

if you managed to make your way to watch the sacrifice by tarkovsky for free, you've already been exposed to open culture dot com

a tremendous culture resource of film, lectures, language lessons, ebooks, audiobooks, textbooks, art images, music,
writing tips, and lists by famous people
go ahead, learning is fun

AND FINALLY… PLEASE GIVE ONE COMPLETELY UNAIDED RECOMMENDATION THAT YOU THINK EVERYONE SHOULD START DOING / USING / WATCHING / EATING / THINKING / QUITING / ETC-ING TO MAKE THEIR LIVES A LITTLE BIT MORE BETTER / BEARABLE.

try to find a southern indian food restaurant and order a dosa
i particularly like the eggplant dosa but there are many different delicious kinds
and any one of them will make life a little more bearable

OK folks, there you have it. Things that Stephen thinks you should consider incorporating into your day/life. Before you leave here to Google "where can I haz dosa", go check out Stephen's website and Soundcloud and grab his book… and if you don't already have one, make sure to snag a ticket for the return of Poetry On The Rocks this Friday (April 21).

I'll leave you with a video I found on youtube of Stephen performing "dear marshall i know you" and I guess we'll internet see you all back around these parts for some more HIGHLY RECOMMEND Q&A's with even more people swinging by our little mountain neighbourhood in the very near future.

Or maybe we'll see you back here for some Q&A's with folks that live here. Or maybe for a musical coffee or beer or never ending handful of ear candy. But, until then…

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED W/ CASATI

ON THE LATEST EDITION OF HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Casati—a folk/jazz/pop trio from Winnipeg, who just so happen to be making music at The Heid Out in Cranbrook on April 19th—metaphorically stop by the blog to kindly give us all some recommendations from the top shelf of life's important categories. Because there is no better way to find out if a person is your people than finding out what that person likes, right? Right.

NOW ONWARDS WITH THE LIFE TIPS…

WHAT IS THE ONE ALBUM (OR EP OR SONG) THAT YOU THINK SHOULD BE THE VERY NEXT MUSICAL THING THAT EVERYONE PRESSES PLAY ON THE NEXT TIME THEY FIND THEMSELVES THINKING “WHAT SHOULD I LISTEN TO NOW”?

"Julep" by Punch Brothers would be a favourite song.

The whole album The Phosphorescent Blues is a favourite.  All their albums are favourites... we're big Punch Brothers fans!

Woody Allen's "Sleeper."  Sci-fi meets slapstick.

"Bananas" is another Woody Allen gem.

We play and love Jazz music, and a great book is Downbeat magazine's collection of interviews, which has interviews and articles from the 1930's to present day.

Lots of insight from artists including John Coltrane, Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis...plus a very entertaining interview with Tom Waits with the title "Biting the Green Shiboda," whatever that means.

WHAT IS THE ONE WEBSITE (OR JUST ANY OLD INTERNET THING: APP, GIF, SERVICE, YOUTUBE VIDEO, WHATEVER) THAT YOU WOULD GET REALLY DOWN IN THE DUMPS ABOUT IF IT WERE TO SUDDENLY GO AWAY?

Grace loves watching cat videos.

Jesse likes drooling over guitars he can't afford on kijiji.

Quintin has never been on the internet (that's not entirely true, but almost).

Buying a pasta roller to make homemade noodles. Making the dough only requires flour, eggs and olive oil, and fresh homemade noodles are divine compared to dry store-bought pasta.

OK folks, there you have it. Things that Casati thinks you should consider incorporating into your day/life. Before you head off to search eBay for a pasta roller, go check out Casati's new album & make sure to follow/like on the Facebook / Twitter / Instagram AND if you are reading this today (and if "today" is April 19th) make sure to catch Casati at The Heid Out tonight!

I'll leave you with a Casati live video above and I guess we'll internet see you all back around these parts for some more HIGHLY RECOMMEND Q&A's with even more people swinging by our little mountain neighbourhood in the very near future. Until then…
