Y'know, for a "small" town Kimberley sure has a "big" pool of amazing local businesses. You don't have to spend too much time here to realize there's definitely something going on, and once you do realize it, you might just want to move here. Or at least that's what happened to us.
And now that I am living here and have a blog & stuff, I figured it was high time to start throwing a 'MEET A LOCAL BUSINESS' feature into the re-occurring blog post cycle. And we'll kick things off by meeting Sprout Health Market…
WHAT IS THE 'SPROUT' ORIGIN STORY?
The first Sprout Grocery opened up in 2007. True to its name, it grew enough to need to move to a bigger location. The previous owner had a great run with the business but was ready to shift that energy elsewhere, plus the store needed to move again to make way for Overtime Beer Works. The stars aligned and I had the opportunity to buy Sprout. We relocated the store to the Platzl and reopened in April, on my birthday (a gift to me, from me!).
I recently switched the name to Sprout Health Market to better represent the changes to the business since I took it over. While we still carry groceries, we have shifted a lot of our attention to high quality body care, baby care and supplements.
IF YOU COULD ONLY USE 5 WORDS TO DESCRIBE 'SPROUT HEALTH MARKET' (AND FOR THE SAKE OF THIS QUESTION, LET'S ASSUME YOU CAN ONLY USE 5 WORDS) WHAT WOULD THOSE WORDS BE?
Beautiful. Affordable. Artisanal. Green. Evolving.
ACTUALLY, ON 2ND THOUGHT, IT SEEMS A BIT UNFAIR TO ONLY GET 5 WORDS. SO HOW ABOUT THIS TIME YOU USE AS MANY WORDS AS YOU WANT?
We try to appeal to all of the senses here at Sprout to create a really enjoyable shopping experience. The first thing people notice when they enter is the lovely smell of the soaps and oils we carry. We aimed for an airy feel with bright colours and our beautiful birch themed wall. The goal was to make Sprout a place where people felt comfortable to take their time to peruse and enjoy the space. We purposely laid out the store so it is stroller and wheelchair friendly. We bring new items in every week (that is the evolving part).
As the owner and buyer, I love picking products to grace the shelves at Sprout. I spend time researching brands and their manufacturing practices. I'm a total ingredient geek and I care about third party certifications, natural health industry regulations and full label transparency so I have high standards around what I will sell. Those things are as boring as they sound for most people but for some reason, I am endlessly fascinated by all of that.
ACTUALLY, ON 3RD THOUGHT… I BELIEVE SOMEONE ONCE SAID THAT "A PICTURE IS WORTH 1000 WORDS", SO PLEASE SHARE 5 PICTURES (THAT'S LIKE 5000 WORDS!) THAT YOU THINK BEST CAPTURE THE ESSENCE OF 'SPROUT HEALTH MARKET'.
FINALLY… WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING/S ABOUT RUNNING A BUSINESS IN KIMBERLEY?
I really love being a part of the Platzl. The success of every business here is vital to its neighbours and time and time again, we hear that one of our neighbouring businesses recommended us to their customers. We appreciate it and return the favour all of the time. It's a really wonderful thing to see businesses lifting one another up instead of competing with each other. We have recently begun teaming up with other stores for events and I look forward to exploring those potentials further. There are a lot of people here with some great ideas for our little town!
OK folks, there you have it. The first of many 'MEET A LOCAL BUSINESS' posts. If you're coming to Kimberley sometime down the road, or you're already here, make sure to add 'Swing by SPROUT' to your itinerary. And give them a like on Facebook + sign up for their newsletter to get advanced notice of Customer Appreciation Day as well as some other exciting events they have coming up (like the 'Ladies Night' that went down last night).
Hopefully I'll have another one of these in the not too distant future (give me a shout if you're a local shop that would like to take part).
UPDATE: listen to a 'SPROUT HEALTH MARKET' mix tape (the sixth question follow-up post)
