ON THE LATEST EDITION OF HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Laura Schoenberg—from the Calgary band Locomotive Ghost, who are playing at Centre 64 this Tuesday April 11th—metaphorically stops by the blog to give us all some recommendations from the top shelf of life's important categories. Because there is no better way to find out if a person is your people than finding out what that person likes, right? Right.

NOW ONWARDS WITH THE LIFE TIPS…

WHAT IS THE ONE ALBUM (OR EP OR SONG) THAT YOU THINK SHOULD BE THE VERY NEXT MUSICAL THING THAT EVERYONE PRESSES PLAY ON THE NEXT TIME THEY FIND THEMSELVES THINKING “WHAT SHOULD I LISTEN TO NOW”?

Everyone should definitely check out Hurray for the Riff Raff's album The Navigator.

I listened to it for the first time about two weeks ago and fell in love. Interesting lyrics about important topics, the band hails from New York and I think they would be the perfect live band to check out! The lead singers voice is pretty awesome too and I love bands with a strong female lead.

WHAT IS THE ONE MOVIE OR TV SHOW THAT YOU THINK SHOULD BE NEXT IN EVERYBODY’S NETFLIX QUEUE (OK, DOESN’T HAVE TO BE NETFLIX, WE’RE ALL INTERNET ADULTS HERE AND KNOW HOW TO FIND ANYTHING ONLINE, ONE WAY OR ANOTHER)?

Everyone should watch "La La Land", it was such a wonderful experience to sit in the theatre and watch this musical that took me back to my childhood. It really is just a feel good movie, everyone leaves the theatre with a bit of a skip to their step.

I (AND BY “I” I MEAN “THE PERSON THAT IS READING THIS”) AM GOING TO THE BOOK STORE (OK, PROBABLY AMAZON) TO FIND THE VERY NEXT BOOK THAT I WILL BE PUTTING SOME EXTREMELY VALUABLE ‘ME-TIME' ASIDE FOR. WHICH BOOK WOULD YOU GET, IF YOU WERE ME (AND, I SUPPOSE, YOU HADN’T ALREADY READ WHAT YOU’RE ABOUT TO SUGGEST)?

Wow, so many good books out there! There is one that stands out to me particularly now, written by a french author named Muriel Barbery called "The Elegance of the Hedgehog". Some beautiful philosophical twists here, about finding beauty in the average and the mundane. This book was a delicious read.

WHAT IS THE ONE WEBSITE (OR JUST ANY OLD INTERNET THING: APP, GIF, SERVICE, YOUTUBE VIDEO, WHATEVER) THAT YOU WOULD GET REALLY DOWN IN THE DUMPS ABOUT IF IT WERE TO SUDDENLY GO AWAY?

So, I love Spotify. I think it is an amazing way to share and explore music. I'd be quite sad if it suddenly disappeared.

AND FINALLY… PLEASE GIVE ONE COMPLETELY UNAIDED RECOMMENDATION THAT YOU THINK EVERYONE SHOULD START DOING / USING / WATCHING / EATING / THINKING / QUITING / ETC-ING TO MAKE THEIR LIVES A LITTLE BIT MORE BETTER / BEARABLE.

Everyone should write more! Journal more! I heard about Bullet Journaling today. Great idea for those who just need to get quick thoughts or lists out. Morning Pages is another recommendation, your stream of conscious writing first thing in the morning.

There are so many ways to journal, whether it's all writing, or photo journaling, or lists...whatever! Being more mindful and present is really important for us in an age that is getting quite used to instant everything online. I think journaling, with pen and paper, brings mindfulness beautifully to the surface.

OK folks, there you have it. Things that Laura from Locomotive Ghost thinks you should consider incorporating into your day/life. Before you trade your computer & mouse in for some pen & paper, go do some deep diving around the Locomotive Ghost website & make sure to follow-like LG on the Facebook / Twitter / Instagram… and if you are reading this today (and if "today" is April 11th) make sure to catch Locomotive Ghost live at Center 64 tonight (if "tonight" is April 11th).

I'll leave you with the latest Locomotive Ghost release (which you can grab on their Bandcamp page) and I guess we'll internet see you all back around these parts for some more HIGHLY RECOMMEND Q&A's with even more people swinging by our little mountain neighbourhood in the very near future (or some more Q&A's with people already here).
