KIMBERLEY FARMERS MARKET | MEET A LOCAL BUSINESS
Q&A Postmark: JUNE 2018
WHAT IS THE 'Kimberley Farmers Market' ORIGIN STORY?
The idea for the Kimberley Farmer's Market was formed back in 2012/2013 along with some food sustainability initiatives and some funding for the Wildsight Kimberley Cranbrook branch.
A small group of us ran with that idea and came up with the concept and basic format. We really wanted to encourage small scale food production in our area, and provide a venue where food growers/producers could connect with customers. With some researching, time, energy, and borrowing ideas that had worked in other markets, we came up with the idea of a Thursday evening market, allowing folks who want to get away on weekends a chance to stock up with local food before they left, and a chance for farmers/food producers to have a week day market at which they could sell their produce - to complement a number of regional weekend markets.
From the very first Thursday market back in 2014, Kimberley has embraced the Farmer's Market, and it very quickly became a much anticipated and loved part of the fabric of our community - for locals and visitors alike.
IF YOU COULD ONLY USE 5 WORDS TO DESCRIBE 'KIMBERLEY FARMERS MARKET' (AND FOR THE SAKE OF THIS QUESTION, LET'S ASSUME YOU CAN ONLY USE 5 WORDS) WHAT WOULD THOSE WORDS BE?
Thursday nights on Howard street!
ACTUALLY, ON 2ND THOUGHT, IT SEEMS A BIT UNFAIR TO ONLY GET 5 WORDS. SO HOW ABOUT THIS TIME YOU USE AS MANY WORDS AS YOU WANT?
The Kimberley Farmer's Market quickly became a connecting point.... for vendors and customers, and for our community. It serves as not only a gathering place to stock up on local produce, food and great artisan items, and enjoy some great 'street food', but it also serves as a place to connect on a base level... to food producers, to learn about them and what they do to get food to your table, and to meet and talk to, and connect, with real PEOPLE. The vendors, the volunteers, friends and neighbours, visitors... And that is a wonderful thing in this crazy world that we live in.
Actually, on 3rd thought… I believe a wise one once said "a picture is worth 1000 words" so how about you share 3-5 pictures (that's like 3000-5000 words) that you think best capture the essence of 'Kimberley Farmers Market'.
FINALLY… WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING/S ABOUT RUNNING A BUSINESS around Highway 95 eh?
The excitement, the enthusiasm and the support of the community! From the staff and officials, to businesses to locals and visitors, people love the market and that support is exciting for us as organizers, and the vendors love and appreciate that too.
