CHANTEL DELANEY | MEET A LOCAL
POSTMARK: SEPTEMBER 2016
Chantel Delaney—from the wonderful Sprout Health Market—metaphorically stops by the blog to say "hello" and leave behind a bunch of great tips for getting the most out of a life lived (or a visit visited) around Highway 95 eh.
WHO ARE YOU & WHAT DO YOU DO?
My name is Chantel. I am a certified herbal practitioner (going on 13 years!) as well as the proud new owner of Sprout Health Market. I also consider myself to be a food and wine enthusiast, horror movie aficionado and a somewhat geeky collector of "Canadiana" in the form of books, history and music.
WHY LIVE AROUND HIGHWAY 95 EH?
I grew up in Fernie but I have been really nomadic as an adult. I lived in Australia and New Zealand, then moved to Vancouver Island, then Vancouver and most recently, Toronto. My husband and I decided we wanted to move somewhere closer to family. His family is on the East Coast so we were looking at several places to move. Kimberley had been on my mind for a while. I thought it was the closest thing to Fernie that was still somewhere new. I reached out to a friend living here and within a few weeks, she sent me an email about Sprout being for sale. After dozens of emails and a quick visit last August, that was it. We quit our jobs, put our "summer home" - a little sailboat on Lake Ontario - up for sale and packed up for the long cold drive across Western Canada in December. We bought a cute little house here last spring and are happily settling in to our new neighbourhood.
IF SOMEONE IS ONLY IN TOWN FOR A FEW DAYS, WHAT WOULD BE ON YOUR LIST OF MUST-DO’S?
Definitely a shopping trip to the Platzl stores. I love taking visitors to Arrow & Axe, My Best Friend's Closet, Talaria Footwear & Adornment and Healing Hollow. These stores are so fun to poke around in as well as wonderfully unique businesses with items you won't find anywhere else.
I’M HUNGRY… WHERE SHOULD I GO TO FIX THIS REOCCURRING PROBLEM?
I love eating out in Kimberley. What we lack in quantity is more than made up for in quality. My guilty pleasure is definitely pub food. We eat very healthy at home so I love to indulge whenever I go out for a meal.
My top 5 meals in Kimberley are
Chicken Lime Soup from Burrito Grill
Workday Wings from The Shed
Platzl Rascal sandwich from Pedal & Tap
Szechwan Chicken Lettuce Cups from The Sullivan Pub
Cod & Chips from Irene's Fish & Chips
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE OUTDOOR ACTIVITY AND YOUR TOP PLACE AROUND HERE FOR DOING THAT ACTIVITY?
Every day I take my morning coffee (usually locally roasted Steam Donkey) and my dog for a long walk through the Nature Park. It's my favourite part of each day and I feel really lucky to live so close to it. In the winter, I love cross country skiing at the Kimberley Nordic Trails.
FINALLY… PLEASE SHARE ONE LAST KIMBERLEY TIP / RECOMMENDATION / THOUGHT / WHATEVER THAT YOU DIDN'T GET A CHANCE TO GET IN DURING THE PREVIOUS QUESTIONS.
Kimberley hosts so many local events and festivals. It is really wonderful that we have so many locals willing to dedicate their time, energy and resources into creating these events. I recommend participating in as many as possible so they can continue to take place and grow year after year!
OK, ACTUAL FINALLY… PLEASE GIVE ONE COMPLETELY UNAIDED RECOMMENDATION THAT YOU THINK EVERYONE SHOULD START DOING / USING / WATCHING / LISTENING / EATING / THINKING / QUITTING / READING / ETC-ING TO MAKE THEIR LIVES A LITTLE BIT BETTER AND/OR BEARABLE.
I think everyone should invest in their health on a holistic level. Good health, in body and mind, is the most valuable thing a person can have. Too often, we have to learn that the hard way. I am a big believer in preventative medicine in the form of healthy food, natural remedies and exercise. Guilty pleasures are good for the soul so I always recommend those too (in moderation, of course).
