BRANDI O'NEILL | MEET A LOCAL
POSTMARK: SEPTEMBER 2018
Brandi O’Neill—the book loving mother behind Paper And Cup—metaphorically stops by the blog to say "hello" and leave behind a bunch of great tips for getting the most out of a life lived (or a visit visited) around Highway 95 eh.
WHO ARE YOU & WHAT DO YOU DO?
Just a city girl with a mountain heart and a mom to the best little humans I’ve ever met. I own Paper and Cup in the Platzl, a sweet boutique bookstore and café that’s open 7 days a week from 10-9pm.
WHY LIVE AROUND HIGHWAY 95 EH?
When I meet people who are visiting and they ask me in a hushed voice, “But what do you DO around here?” I’m always stunned. I live here because there is SO MUCH to do and experience and I love that I can grab life by the kahoonas and every day can be an adventure. And the other end of the spectrum is that this is the best place to breathe, relax, rejuvenate and let stress wash away. I couldn’t imagine not living here.
IF SOMEONE IS ONLY IN THE AREA FOR A FEW DAYS, WHAT WOULD BE ON YOUR LIST OF MUST-DO’S?
I’ve got two kids so I’m always looking for family friendly – Marysville Falls, local swim hole, hike the ski hill, skate park, Kimberley Nature Park, Rotary Park, Spirit Rock climbing, paddle boarding, kayaking, downhill biking, skiing, swimming… the list is endless here!
I’M HUNGRY… WHERE SHOULD I GO TO FIX THIS REOCCURRING PROBLEM?
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE OUTDOOR ACTIVITY AND YOUR TOP PLACE AROUND HERE FOR DOING THAT ACTIVITY?
Camping with friends and family is definitely top of my list! This year I was lucky enough to camp in various places from Fairmont Hot Springs and Kimberley Riverside with all the amenities to booking all of Camp Stone with multiple families over a long weekend, and finally to bush camping complete with dirt biking and quading… I enjoyed all of it!
FINALLY… PLEASE SHARE ONE LAST KOOTENAY TIP / RECOMMENDATION / THOUGHT / WHATEVER THAT YOU DIDN'T GET A CHANCE TO GET IN DURING THE PREVIOUS QUESTIONS.
Always try something new – you just might feel like a kid again! There are so many people here willing to help teach an activity you’ve never tried before. I’ve had so many experiences because of the amazing people who live here and have open hearts willing to teach or lend equipment.
OK, ACTUAL FINALLY… PLEASE GIVE ONE COMPLETELY UNAIDED RECOMMENDATION THAT YOU THINK EVERYONE SHOULD START DOING / USING / WATCHING / LISTENING / EATING / THINKING / QUITTING / READING / ETC-ING TO MAKE THEIR LIVES A LITTLE BIT BETTER AND/OR BEARABLE.
Be brave. Be vulnerable. Be yourself. I’ve learned a lot after a separation, raising kids, starting a business here and doing it without a life partner. It wasn’t the path I originally chose but sometimes the sweetness is the unknown in life. And drop the dead weight – we have one shot at this life and you need to surround yourself with people who make your belly laugh around the fire and let you do you, never criticizing any mess made along the way.
