DIEMM | PASSING THRU
Postmark: SEPTEMBER 2018
Before singer-songer-harpist Diemm stopped at Centre 64 on their September 2018 tour, we asked some “who exactly is passing thru?” questions. And you can read the answers below.
HELLO! HOW ARE YOU (WHEREVER YOU ARE)?
Wonderful! I’m immersed in about ten thousand things, getting ready for the Ten Thousand Miracles tour. I’m now learning why artists hire people to do tour planning and other admin tasks! It’s endless... such learning. And the outcome will be an amazing tour!
ALSO (FOR THE FOLKS AT HOME THAT DIDN'T DO THEIR PRE- Q&A HOMEWORK)... WHO ARE YOU & WHAT DO YOU DO?
I’m Diemm. Singer-songwriter-harper-poet. I live just outside Kaslo, BC on the shores of Kootenay Lake. In performance, I play harp and sing, and orate memorized pieces my own poetry.
FOR REASONS UNKNOWN (OK, MAYBE THE REASONS ARE OUR OUT-OF-THE-WAY LOCATION & SMALLER POPULATION), THESE NECK OF THE WOODS DON'T ALWAYS END UP ON EVERYBODY'S TOUR POSTER. SO HOW DID WE GET SO LUCKY TO END UP ON YOUR ITINERARY?
I live in a village - I understand the appeal of small town culture! Kimberley is a beautiful little town. I got to come here once before (using my previous artist name HarpPixie), to perform at Centre 64, as part of Kimberley Kaleidoscope Festival. When planning this tour, I wanted to perform in beautiful halls and churches across BC. Centre 64 is a fantastic arts centre, and makes Kimberley a very appealing town to visit. Small towns are fantastic!
IF YOU COULD ONLY USE 5 WORDS TO DESCRIBE A DIEMM SHOW (AND FOR THE SAKE OF THIS QUESTION, LET'S ASSUME YOU CAN ONLY USE 5 WORDS) WHAT WOULD THOSE WORDS BE?
Clear, immersive, alchemy; aha, dream.
ACTUALLY, SINCE IT'S THE INTERNET AND WE CAN EMBED THINGS, HOW ABOUT YOU SHARE THREE OF YOUR FAVOURITE SONGS TO PERFORM AND THAT WILL GIVE FOLKS A MORE TANGIBLE IDEA OF THE KIND OF MUSICAL GOODNESS THAT AWAITS THEM AT YOUR SHOW?
Song 1: Moon Pocket | The crowd pleaser; Moon Pocket has a nice groove and becomes many people’s favourite. It’s full of whimsical imagery.
Song 2: Ten Thousand Miracles in a Roomful of Regrets | The title song to my fourteen track debut album! This one is acrobatic. Harp acrobatics and vocal acrobatics. Lots of harp layers, and some anthemic vocal layers on the chorus. It’s about the human tendency to focus on problems and fears, instead of being swept away by gratitude, joy, love. I wrote this one using a loop pedal, and surprised myself by improvising more layers of harp live in the recording studio.
Song 3: Siren Song | Heartbreak plus hope. A song about unconditional love and realizing that capital ‘L’ Love has no demands.
Song 4: Golden Cloak of Bones | I wrote this one walking along Kootenay Lake, outside my door in the mountains of BC Canada. It’s short (2.5 min), and spare, with only harp and bass and voice. It speaks about looking for the Love we already are - within ourselves - rather than looking outside of ourselves for Love.
OK, NOW THAT WE'VE ALL GOT A DECENT IDEA OF WHAT TO EXPECT ON STAGE... WHAT ARE SOME OF THE THINGS YOU LIKE TO DO WHEN YOU'RE NOT MAKING MUSIC?
Ah, well. Like I mentioned, I live in a tiny village on Kootenay Lake. Making livelihood here has meant making my own business! I’ve been feeding countless people for the past eighteen years with my business Feed Your Soul Foods. I’ve spent many, many hours in the kitchen, singing while making cookies. I’m so grateful that I’ve had such freedom to sing while I work! Now, I have a couple of spectacular employees, and can wander off into other tiny villages and play concerts instead of just singing in the basement, to an audience of pastries and salads.
AND—EVEN THOUGH WE'VE ONLY KNOWN EACH OTHER FOR 6 QUESTIONS—WHAT'S SOMETHING ABOUT YOU THAT WOULD TOTALLY SURPRISE US?
Hmmm... I didn’t start playing harp when I was a child? I didn’t start singing until I was thirty? I cut my own hair?
FINALLY... PLEASE LEAVE US ALL WITH YOUR BEST PIECE OF LIFE ADVICE THAT YOU THINK EVERYONE SHOULD START DOING / USING / WATCHING / LISTENING / EATING / THINKING / QUITTING / READING / ETC-ING TO MAYBE MAKE THEIR LIFE A LITTLE BIT BETTER AND/OR BEARABLE.
Art makes art makes art. The biggest gift I get from performing is hearing other people say “I’m so inspired!” There is no way to do this thing wrong. Just dive in and be immersed in the deep waters of your own creativity. Even if you think “I’m not creative.” Maybe especially if you think that!!
