DON MCCORMICK | MEET A LOCAL… CANDIDATE
POSTMARK: OCTOBER 2018
Before Kimberley hit the polls (voting polls, not ski poles) to vote for Mayor, City Council, and School Trustees, we figured it would be a good idea to try and “MEET A LOCAL” all the local candidates. And that is how mayoral candidate Don McCormick (spoiler alert: Don was re-elected) came to metaphorically stop by the blog to say "hey" and leave behind some tips for getting the most out of a life lived (or a visit visited) around Highway 95 eh.
WHO ARE YOU & WHAT DO YOU DO… AND WHY DO YOU LIVE AROUND HIGHWAY 95 EH?
Bev and I found Kimberley in the mid-90s like a lot of other people – by accident! We were on a golf holiday and stopped in Kimberley to overnight. We stayed permanently in Y2K. But not in retirement. I commuted to Edmonton for several years before joining Bev here full time in 2006 and continued to work with Kimberley as my home base. Internet and airport allowed me to do that.
Through Synersales Management I consult with start-up and early stage companies on business management, sales management and growth strategies. Most clients have been mostly tech companies. At least I did this until 2014. Since then I have had the privilege to be Mayor of our awesome community which is a full time job!
There is so much talk about recreation and lifestyle, but what attracted us here and why we stay is the community – the people and the place we call home.
IF SOMEONE IS ONLY IN THE AREA FOR A FEW DAYS, WHAT WOULD BE ON YOUR LIST OF MUST-DO’S?
There are so many things to do in Kimberley! Top of list is the Kimberley Mining Railway – which is a beautiful picture of why this town is here and the colourful history that we share. If you have kids, a few hours at Rotary park with the dozens of other families that hang out there is a great way to spend a summer’s afternoon. A concert or art showing at Centre 64, a cold pop on one of the many patios in the Platzl, a long hike through the Kimberley Nature Park and a round trip to Cranbrook via Rails2Trails would round out an awesome taste of Kimberley.
I’M HUNGRY… WHERE SHOULD I GO TO FIX THIS REOCCURRING PROBLEM?
We are blessed with incredible culinary experiences…Bev and I have everyone on a rotation so that we experience all there is to offer!
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE ACTIVITY AND YOUR TOP PLACE AROUND HERE FOR DOING THAT ACTIVITY?
Summertime is definitely golf for us. Like so many others, we have passes for all three of our amazing golf courses. In the winter, it is snowshoes or just plain hiking on Trickle Creek golf paths.
FINALLY… PLEASE GIVE ONE COMPLETELY UNAIDED RECOMMENDATION THAT YOU THINK EVERYONE SHOULD START DOING / USING / WATCHING / LISTENING / EATING / THINKING / QUITTING / READING / ETC-ING TO MAKE THEIR LIVES A LITTLE BIT BETTER AND/OR BEARABLE.
Our service clubs and other non-profits provide incredible service to our community. Attracting new members or volunteers to carry the torch is extremely difficult for these organizations. If everyone dedicated just a small piece of their time to one of the many non-profits our community would be a better place and you would feel a huge sense of gratification for service to your community
OK, ACTUAL FINALLY… ON OCTOBER 20TH, 2018 KIMBERLEY WILL BE HITTING THE POLLS TO VOTE FOR CITY COUNCIL AND YOU ARE ONE OF THE CANDIDATES, SO — IF YOU HAD TO CONDENSE YOUR RUNNING PLATFORM DOWN TO A PARAGRAPH OR TWO, WHAT WOULD THAT BE?
We need to manage our resources in a way that lets us enjoy our Kimberley lifestyle while also ensuring that our quality of life can be shared by our kids and their kids. It is this vision of sustained prosperity that prompted me to run for Council in 2011 and Mayor in 2014. There are many things underway in support of this vision and I am asking for support to see them through.
