JAY SIMON-CUMMING | MEET A LOCAL… CANDIDATE

POSTMARK: SEPTEMBER 2018

On October 20th, 2018 Kimberley will be hitting the polls (voting polls, not ski poles) to select their Mayor, City Councillors, and School Trustees. So before it’s time to cast your ballot—and before the upcoming All Candidates Forums for City Council on Oct 15 and Mayoral & School Trustees on Oct 16—how about we “MEET A LOCAL” these local candidates?

And on that note: City Council candidate Jay Simon-Cumming metaphorically stopped by the blog to say "hello" and leave behind some tips for getting the most out of a life lived (or a visit visited) around Highway 95 eh.

WHO ARE YOU & WHAT DO YOU DO?

My name is Jay Simon-Cumming. I was born in southern Ontario and landed in the east Kootenays in 2005 to take Marketing at the College of the Rockies. As soon as I graduated I moved out to Kimberley. Since then I have gotten married, had a child and bought a house, effectively putting down roots that I have no ambition to pull. As for what I do, I enjoy snowboarding, mountain biking, bmx biking, motorcycling, camping and hanging out with the family walking the dog.

As for work, I spent the last five years working on motorcycles in Cranbrook at the Harley shop. I very recently took a spot with Pat down at Meadowbrook Motors. I've finally freed myself from the commute!

WHY LIVE AROUND HIGHWAY 95 EH?

Simply put, I came for school, stayed for the snowboarding. And camping. And bike riding. I've always enjoyed the outdoors and as we all know, the opportunities around here for outdoor recreation are as endless as they are awesome.

IF SOMEONE IS ONLY IN THE AREA FOR A FEW DAYS, WHAT WOULD BE ON YOUR LIST OF MUST-DO’S?

A couple of days won't do. And it depends on the season, but it would be shred the gnar you're into! The only thing we don't really have is a dance club.

On my list? Bootleg shuttles, Tata creek dirt bike rides, or simply set up camp by the Mary's and relax for a day or two.

I’M HUNGRY… WHERE SHOULD I GO TO FIX THIS REOCCURRING PROBLEM?

No shortage of options here. One of my fav's is the Pedal and Tap. I've yet to have a bad meal here. If you're rolling kid free the Sully is always a classic. And if the Nitros are playing, a better venue for a cold one can't be found. The Burrito Grill always holds a special place in my heart. The list is far too long.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE ACTIVITY AND YOUR TOP PLACE AROUND HERE FOR DOING THAT ACTIVITY?

Way too hard to nail down. Inbound skiing at the resort is always fun. If you're out of bounds skiing Zippermouth creek is always a classic. Purple people pleaser up the bootleg is some of the best times had on two wheels in a long time.

FINALLY… PLEASE GIVE ONE COMPLETELY UNAIDED RECOMMENDATION THAT YOU THINK EVERYONE SHOULD START DOING / USING / WATCHING / LISTENING / EATING / THINKING / QUITTING / READING / ETC-ING TO MAKE THEIR LIVES A LITTLE BIT BETTER AND/OR BEARABLE.

Everybody should take some time to themselves, and focus on staying happy. We only get one shot at this, no sense being unhappy.

OK, ACTUAL FINALLY… ON OCTOBER 20TH, 2018 KIMBERLEY WILL BE HITTING THE POLLS TO VOTE FOR CITY COUNCIL AND YOU ARE ONE OF THE CANDIDATES, SO — IF YOU HAD TO CONDENSE YOUR RUNNING PLATFORM DOWN TO A PARAGRAPH OR TWO, WHAT WOULD THAT BE?

I am interested in finding a home for businesses like Sullivan machine works. We have jobs in town, but not much in the way of careers. It would be excellent if my daughter could take an apprenticeship locally and work locally, if she were to choose.

As town grows, and housing get tighter, we need to re-evaluate the parking situation. Many homes are now being occupied by more than one family. I'm seeing four cars where there was once two. Kim (the bylaw gal) is very agreeable, but her job is to enforce the bylaws as written. I believe these bylaws need another look, for another era.

Thanks for the opportunity, and I hope to get your vote on the 20th!

ALRIGHT, THAT'S ALL THE Q'S AND A'S FOR THIS Q&A. Before you head off to some other corner of the internet, make sure to check out Jay Simon-Cumming for Kimberley Council on Facebook for more info and also make sure to mark your calendar to attend the ‘All Candidates Forums’ for City Council on Oct 15 and Mayoral & School Trustees on Oct 16. and *most importantly* put a big circle around October 20th as that’s the day you get to cast your vote.

95EH will be attempting to run a Q&A with all the candidates before the upcoming election, so make sure to check back on the regular or follow on Facebook / Twitter / Instagram for updates.

AND, as always, IF YOU WOULD BE INTERESTED IN DOING A Q&A LIKE THIS YOURSELF (AS A PERSON OR AS YOUR BUSINESS/ORGANIZATION) OR IF YOU'D BE INTERESTED IN CONTRIBUTING / COLLABORATING ON SOMETHING ELSE 95EH, PLEASE FEEL FREE TO SEND A "HEY!" TO:
