JOSH LOCKHART | MEET A LOCAL… CANDIDATE
POSTMARK: OCTOBER 2018
On October 20th, 2018 Kimberley will be hitting the polls (voting polls, not ski poles) to select their Mayor, City Councillors, and School Trustees. So before it’s time to cast ballots—and before the upcoming All Candidates Forums for City Council on Oct 15 and Mayoral & School Trustees on Oct 16—how about we “MEET A LOCAL” these local candidates?
And on that note: City Council candidate Josh Lockhart metaphorically stops by the blog today to say "hey" and leave behind some tips for getting the most out of a life lived (or a visit visited) around Highway 95 eh.
WHO ARE YOU & WHAT DO YOU DO?
Hello! I am a husband and father. I work full-time at Ktunaxa/Kinbasket Child & Family Services as a Mental Health Clinician. I also write, blog, and podcast about the Kimberley Dynamiters. I do the occasional parenting group as well through the Community Connections Society. I DJ the occasional family friendly dance. I try to do gymnastics with my daughter and play Fortnite with my son - neither one I am good at.
WHY LIVE AROUND HIGHWAY 95 EH?
I originally moved here for graduate school with Gonzaga University. We chose to stay and buy a house in Kimberley for many reasons. It is a family friendly area, we can walk up an old logging road to the nature park and feel like we are connected with nature. And mostly because moving here from Winnipeg, you can actually be outside and enjoy winter here!
IF SOMEONE IS ONLY IN THE AREA FOR A FEW DAYS, WHAT WOULD BE ON YOUR LIST OF MUST-DO’S?
There's too many! But here are a few of my favourite's. Check out the Platzl, stroll along Mark Creek, splash around at the flume or the park at Rotary, sled at Boot Leg, and enjoy a Nitro's game.
I’M HUNGRY… WHERE SHOULD I GO TO FIX THIS REOCCURRING PROBLEM?
My family loves going to the Burrito Grill for dinner. If you want a local taste, try the mucky fries at Pedal & Tap. To satisfy your sweet tooth, I like the raspberry stuffed doughnuts at Kimberley City Bakery.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE ACTIVITY AND YOUR TOP PLACE AROUND HERE FOR DOING THAT ACTIVITY?
According to my google maps tracker, I spend a lot of time at the Civic Centre. I enjoy the rich history of going to a Kimberley Dynamiters game. I also go there for free family skates. But if I feel like disconnecting from the world, I like strolling down Lions Way along Mark Creek between Kimberley and Marysville.
FINALLY… PLEASE GIVE ONE COMPLETELY UNAIDED RECOMMENDATION THAT YOU THINK EVERYONE SHOULD START DOING / USING / WATCHING / LISTENING / EATING / THINKING / QUITTING / READING / ETC-ING TO MAKE THEIR LIVES A LITTLE BIT BETTER AND/OR BEARABLE.
Simple. Find one opportunity a day (or more) to do a random act of coolness. I believe that act alone will make such a difference in the lives around you and your life.
OK, ACTUAL FINALLY… ON OCTOBER 20TH, 2018 KIMBERLEY WILL BE HITTING THE POLLS TO VOTE FOR CITY COUNCIL AND YOU ARE ONE OF THE CANDIDATES, SO — IF YOU HAD TO CONDENSE YOUR RUNNING PLATFORM DOWN TO A PARAGRAPH OR TWO, WHAT WOULD THAT BE?
Kimberley is an amazing community and we need to balance it's rich history, with is amazing present, and beautiful future. We need to start and continue to make decisions that will help attract and maintain families and businesses to the area. Families and businesses need to be heard and understood, because without them, we wouldn't have a city.
The Kimberley I see has infrastructure, jobs for families, families for jobs, nature, and is a desirable location to live and visit.
