KENT GOODWIN | MEET A LOCAL… CANDIDATE
POSTMARK: SEPTEMBER 2018
Before Kimberley hit the polls (voting polls, not ski poles) to vote for Mayor, City Council, and School Trustees in October 2018, we figured it would be a good idea to try and “MEET A LOCAL” all the local candidates. And that is how City Council candidate Kent Goodwin (spoiler alert: Kent was re-elected) came to metaphorically stop by the blog to say "hey" and leave behind some tips for getting the most out of a life lived (or a visit visited) around Highway 95 eh.
WHO ARE YOU & WHAT DO YOU DO?
I am a retired journeyman cabinetmaker who worked for many years at the Kimberley School District maintenance department. I have been a City Councillor for 7 years and am also the president of the Kimberley Nature Park Society, the treasurer of the Kimberley & District Community Foundation and a director of the Healthy Kimberley Society.
WHY LIVE AROUND HIGHWAY 95 EH?
I was born in Kimberley, moved away as a child and returned in 1982 to raise my family here. I can’t think of a better place on earth to raise kids. And it’s a pretty good place to be for adults as well.
IF SOMEONE IS ONLY IN THE AREA FOR A FEW DAYS, WHAT WOULD BE ON YOUR LIST OF MUST-DO’S?
Of course, a hike in the Kimberley Nature Park or Horse Barn Valley Interpretive Forest. A bike ride would be okay too, but if you do it on foot you are more likely to see all the neat small stuff that makes the place so special.
I’M HUNGRY… WHERE SHOULD I GO TO FIX THIS REOCCURRING PROBLEM?
You’ve got a lot of choices in Kimberley and they are all good. If I am just thirsty I will sometimes drop in to Over Time Beer Works. If I am thirsty and hungry then my go-to place for decades has been the Sully.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE ACTIVITY AND YOUR TOP PLACE AROUND HERE FOR DOING THAT ACTIVITY?
FINALLY… PLEASE GIVE ONE COMPLETELY UNAIDED RECOMMENDATION THAT YOU THINK EVERYONE SHOULD START DOING / USING / WATCHING / LISTENING / EATING / THINKING / QUITTING / READING / ETC-ING TO MAKE THEIR LIVES A LITTLE BIT BETTER AND/OR BEARABLE.
Rewrite your will and make a bequest to the Kimberley & District Community Foundation. You will be helping every charitable organization in the community and because the money goes into one of their permanent endowment funds, you will be helping them forever. Doing this will improve your outlook, help you sleep better at night and make you feel connected to your community.
OK, ACTUAL FINALLY… ON OCTOBER 20TH, 2018 KIMBERLEY WILL BE HITTING THE POLLS TO VOTE FOR CITY COUNCIL AND YOU ARE ONE OF THE CANDIDATES, SO — IF YOU HAD TO CONDENSE YOUR RUNNING PLATFORM DOWN TO A PARAGRAPH OR TWO, WHAT WOULD THAT BE?
I want Kimberley to be a safe, healthy, vibrant and sustainable small town. We already are some of those things, and the work we have done over the last two terms to address the infrastructure deficit, develop a new community brand and keep taxes under control have helped move us further in that direction. In the next 4 years we need to conclude the sale of the Sunmine, build a new sewage treatment plant, find and designate some brownfield land for future light industrial development and continue to refresh our brand. We need to determine what the City can do in addition to shifting the flat tax to the mil rate tax, to stimulate affordable rental housing. We need to continue to support the non-profit sector which is responsible for a good deal of the social and cultural vibrancy of the community.
I have enjoyed my two terms on City Council and believe that I have been effective in helping make good decisions for the town. I pay attention to detail, am responsive to public feedback, and can work cooperatively with my fellow council members. I would appreciate an opportunity to serve another term on Council and hope folks will consider voting for me.
