MARK McCUE | MEET A (WANDERING) LOCAL
POSTMARK: SEPTEMBER 2019
Mark McCue—a stand-up comic originally from Cranbrook, currently living in Edmonton, but also coming back to Cranbrook for the Kootenay Comedy Festival on September 6th + 7th, 2019 —metaphorically stops by the blog to say "hello" and leave behind a bunch of great tips for getting the most out of a life lived (or a visit visited) around Highway 95 eh.
WHO ARE YOU & WHAT DO YOU DO?
My name is Mark McCue and I'm a stand up comedian. I have travelled all over the country and recently headlined a weekend at the Edmonton Yuk Yuks.
NORMALLY, THIS QUESTION ASKS "WHY DO YOU LIVE AROUND HERE?" — BUT SINCE YOU CURRENTLY LIVE ELSEWHERE I GUESS THE QUESTION FOR YOU IS: WHAT DO YOU MISS MOST ABOUT LIVING AROUND HERE?
I suppose what I miss most about Cranbrook is the theatre. I was heavily involved in community theatre and high school productions when I was growing up and it gave me a taste of what it is like to be a performer.
IF SOMEONE IS ONLY IN THE AREA FOR A FEW DAYS, WHAT WOULD BE ON YOUR LIST OF MUST-DO’S?
If you are only here for a few days, I guess I would recommend visiting the gardens in Kimberley or taking the mine tour. At least that is what I always enjoy when I come back.
I’M HUNGRY… WHERE SHOULD I GO TO FIX THIS REOCCURRING PROBLEM?
Frank's. Is Frank's still a place? They bring you so much food and I always have enjoyed the service there.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE OUTDOOR ACTIVITY AND YOUR TOP PLACE AROUND HERE FOR DOING THAT ACTIVITY?
I enjoy doing comedy most and used to like doing shows at the old Laugh Shop in the hotel before that shut down. But I also have done shows at the Green Door and the Stage Door.
PLEASE GIVE US THREE ANSWERS TO THE TOTALLY ORIGINAL COMEDY BIT WE JUST CAME UP WITH CALLED "YOU MIGHT BE FROM THE EAST KOOTENAYS IF…"?
You may be from the Kootenays if…
You forgot that Bud Abbot was also the name of the guy from Abbot and Costello.
Or if you are surprised when it snows in June (even though it happens every year).
Or if you have hit multiple deer and no longer feel guilty about it.
OK, ACTUAL FINALLY… PLEASE GIVE ONE COMPLETELY UNAIDED RECOMMENDATION THAT YOU THINK EVERYONE SHOULD START DOING / USING / WATCHING / LISTENING / EATING / THINKING / QUITTING / READING / ETC-ING TO MAKE THEIR LIVES A LITTLE BIT BETTER AND/OR BEARABLE.
I used to have issues with depression. And while I can't say I have a cure that would work for everyone, I can say what worked for me. I became obsessed with filling up my calendar. Not just with gigs, but just anything I was excited about. New Star Wars movies, video games I wanted to play, visits with friends. It made me excited for the future instead of always dreading the present.
