SALTWATER SESSIONS | INTRODUCTIONS
Q&A Postmark: AUGUST 2018
WHAT IS THE 'SALTWATER SESSIONS' ORIGIN STORY?
My husband Lennan and I started Saltwater Sessions together about a year after we moved to Kimberley from Toronto. Lennan, a Celtic fiddle player and multi-instrumentalist originally from Cape Breton, NS, lived in Toronto for 12 years. When I joined him there I was amazed at the community of blow-your-mind musicians he was a part of. When we moved here, I became very adamant that we needed to bring a little bit of that music scene to Kimberley.
There was a musician in particular, Nathan Bishop MacDonald, that I was particularly keen on bringing out. He and Lennan played together often in Toronto and they put on a really authentic East Coast performance. Together, they capture this essence of the Maritimes that is hard to come by anywhere west of Nova Scotia. Nathan, also from Cape Breton, has a deep baritone voice and lives and breathes his culture. He and Lennan have a chemistry on stage that never ceases to impress me. Some musicians are just meant to share a stage and I felt like it was a real crime not to share that performance with our new community here.
Nathan came out last August for a sold out show at the Green Door and a follow up at the Stage Door in Cranbrook. Since then, we have thrown 5 more shows with other incredible artists and we have no plans on stopping any time soon.
Nathan is returning for a second performance at the Kimberley Golf Club patio this Friday and we are so delighted to have him back again. They will be performing at Wapiti in Fernie the following day as well.
IF YOU COULD ONLY USE 5 WORDS TO DESCRIBE 'SALTWATER SESSIONS' (AND FOR THE SAKE OF THIS QUESTION, LET'S ASSUME YOU CAN ONLY USE 5 WORDS) WHAT WOULD THOSE WORDS BE?
Maritime music and good times!
ACTUALLY, ON 2ND THOUGHT, IT SEEMS A BIT UNFAIR TO ONLY GET 5 WORDS. SO HOW ABOUT THIS TIME YOU USE AS MANY WORDS AS YOU WANT?
Saltwater Sessions is a labour of love for Lennan and I. We organize everything off the sides of our desks and it takes a lot of time and energy to plan the shows.
We are committed to contributing to the diversity in our local music community as well as creating opportunities for musicians to travel here and experience a place they might not otherwise visit.
Actually, on 3rd thought… I believe a wise one once said "a picture is worth 1000 words" so how about you share 3-5 pictures (that's like 3000-5000 words) that you think best capture the essence of 'SALTWATER SESSIONS'.
FINALLY… WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE THING/S ABOUT RUNNING something like 'SALTWATER SESSIONS' around Highway 95 eh?
We have had so much support since we started. I can't tell you how great it feels to get a good review or have someone stop us to tell us how much fun they had at one of our shows. We have a few more events in the works and are excited to see how our project grows in the years to come.
