THE OM SOUND | PASSING THRU
ENTRY BY JEREMY/HI54LOFI: JULY 2019
On July 11th, 2019 (aka: THIS THURSDAY!), Montreal-based trio The Om Sound will be passing thru the Highway 95eh area with a stop at Soulfood in Cranbrook (and moving on to Fernie & Nelson next, if you happen to be picking this signal up on some nearby Kootenay wifi). But who exactly is passing thru? And why? And would it be too much to ask to have some music to sample? Well, Questions, just keep scrolling…
HELLO! HOW ARE YOU (WHEREVER YOU ARE)?
Hello! We're feeling fantastic! We are en route across Canada at the beginning of our two month tour. Living the dream! #Tourlife
ALSO (FOR THE FOLKS AT HOME THAT DIDN'T DO THEIR PRE- Q&A HOMEWORK)... WHO ARE YOU & WHAT DO YOU DO?
We are The OM Sound: a Montreal based neo-soul electro jazz-funk trio, fusing heavy synths and live looping with organic instruments and conscious vocals. We aim to make as big of a sound as possible for three people, and break genre barriers by embracing creative opportunities full-on.
FOR REASONS UNKNOWN (OK, MAYBE THE REASONS ARE OUR OUT-OF-THE-WAY LOCATION & SMALLER POPULATION), THESE NECK OF THE WOODS DON'T ALWAYS END UP ON EVERYBODY'S TOUR POSTER. SO HOW DID WE GET SO LUCKY TO END UP ON YOUR ITINERARY?
For the past four or five Canada-wide tours, we've made sure to book shows in the Kootenays. We lived in Nelson for a couple years, and of course fell in love with the whole area. There is too much to love: mountain culture, music, chill people, good vibes! This year we play Cranbrook on July 11th, Fernie on the 12th, Nelson on the 13th, and Starbelly Jam Music Festival the following weekend, July 19/20
IF YOU COULD ONLY USE 5 WORDS TO DESCRIBE an ‘Om Sound’ SHOW (AND FOR THE SAKE OF THIS QUESTION, LET'S ASSUME YOU CAN ONLY USE 5 WORDS) WHAT WOULD THOSE WORDS BE?
Transformative, virtuosic, inspirational, dynamic, limitless.
ACTUALLY, SINCE IT'S THE INTERNET AND WE CAN EMBED THINGS, HOW ABOUT YOU SHARE THREE OF YOUR FAVOURITE SONGS TO PERFORM AND THAT WILL GIVE FOLKS A MORE TANGIBLE IDEA OF THE KIND OF MUSICAL GOODNESS THAT AWAITS THEM AT YOUR SHOW?
Imminent Light (live) | This is the title track off our recent album, and is a dark jazz-prog instrumental.
Hidden Valley (live) | This track delves more into the realm of world rhythms and gives a good example of our lyrical inspiration.
Boîte Chaude (live) | This is our latest release, and is another instrumental, but organ jazz-funk, straight up.
OK, NOW THAT WE'VE ALL GOT A DECENT IDEA OF WHAT TO EXPECT ON STAGE... WHAT ARE SOME OF THE THINGS YOU LIKE TO DO WHEN YOU'RE NOT MAKING MUSIC?
Being creative in whatever pursuit. Writing novels, surfing in the ocean and rivers, reading, exploring, adventuring, road tripping, practicing yoga, meditating, film making...loving life!
AND—EVEN THOUGH WE'VE ONLY KNOWN EACH OTHER FOR 6 QUESTIONS—WHAT'S SOMETHING ABOUT YOU THAT WOULD TOTALLY SURPRISE US?
Of all the festivals and venues we've played across the country, we are the band with the most gear...and we're a trio... After popping several tires per #tourlife, we upgraded to a giant Mercedes Sprinter which we now tour in, and though we now have even more gear, at least we're safe on the road! (*Knock on van.*)
FINALLY... PLEASE LEAVE US ALL WITH YOUR BEST PIECE OF LIFE ADVICE THAT YOU THINK EVERYONE SHOULD START DOING / USING / WATCHING / LISTENING / EATING / THINKING / QUITTING / READING / ETC-ING TO MAYBE MAKE THEIR LIFE A LITTLE BIT BETTER AND/OR BEARABLE.
Follow your heart and live simply. It's cliché, but of all the people we've met over the years, all over the world, the ones that are the happiest are the ones living creatively with less. Go after your dreams, and share your light with the world. And remember, no matter your worldly responsibilities, chill-ness is a mental choice and is not dependent on outer conditions. Onwards are upwards!
